FAQ

Preparing for moving day

Q: I live in a densely populated area. Parking is limited what should I do?
A: Make sure arrange parking for the truck before your moving day. Inform your neighbors that you need the area clear for the removals truck. Park your cars in the area the night before. If you live within the CBD, parking permits can be obtained from the local council.

Q: When should I empty my fridge and freezer?
A: We normally load your Fridge on towards the end of the job. This ensures the fridge comes off quickly at the drop off. All food must be emptied from the fridge and freezer section. It is a good idea to have an esky available for packing these items on the morning of your move.

Q: I’m not sure how to pack my boxes!
A: For detailed advice, please call our helpful consultants or for more info, Click here.

Q: What should I do with my paintings?
A: Wrapped and protected with furniture pads provided on the day of your move, bubble wrap or Picture boxes. For best protection, bubble wrap and or picture boxes are best. To order Picture boxes, click here.

Q: What about my BBQ?
A: Yes we move BBQ’s. You must remove the gas bottle first. One of your team members can do this for you. Make sure it is clean or has a cover to protect against dirtying any other items in the truck. Unfortunately we can not take gas bottles. A special permit is required to transport gas. If something goes wrong it voids all insurance.

Q: My beds may need to be taken apart?
A: Our trucks are all equipped with the necessary tools for our removalists to attend to basic dismantling and reassembly of furniture items including: bed headboards and bed frames, shelving, desks, trampolines and other standard residential and office furniture items.

Q: What if my relocation does not fit in one load?
A: Metro Movers trucks are the largest rigid body trucks that can legally be driven in suburban streets. The capacity of the trucks is such that 4 to 5 bedroom house contents can be transported in one load. Most of the moves we do are completed in one trip. In some cases, due to circumstances, two trips may be required. If this is the case, and the pick up and drop off addresses are within a short distance from each other, a second load may be required. If you have same day property settlement time constraints or if moving distance is far apart we can provide a second truck.

Q: I don’t know how many boxes I will need to do my packing?
A: Below is an indicator of how many boxes you may need to be packed depending on the size of your home. Please note that this may vary depending on how many possessions you have.

Whole house pack indicator:

  • One bedroom unit approx 20 boxes
  • Three bedroom house approx 70 boxes

Q: Is it possible to move during inclement weather?
A: When booking your move, it is not always possible to know what the weather will be doing on Move Day. Often the date of your move is a fixed date and cannot be changed. We understand all that and, while it may be more pleasurable to move on a sunny day, our professional movers are prepared to move during rain, sleet, or extreme heat. They come equipped with supplies to keep your belongings safe from the elements.

Q: There may be problems for the truck to park outside my house on moving day
A: If you live on a busy street with a clearway, please notify us and we will arrange your start time accordingly.

Q: I live in a high rise apartment building with lift access. How do I make sure we can have sole use of the lifts for our move?
A: You will need to speak with your building manager to book a time slot for your move. MetroMovers can assist here to coordinate with the building manager. If the access to the lift is via an underground or covered area, we provide large wide Flat Bed Trolleys to ferry your furniture and boxes between the lift to the truck. This is the most efficient way to carry out these moves.

Q: Both my properties are settling on the same day. How do I know what time to book the Moving team?
A: If you know your settlement date, It is important that you secure your Move Day with MetroMovers as soon as possible. The actual start time of your move can be decided closer to the day as and when you receive the settlement times of the properties. This information is usually available about 7 to 10 days prior to settlement. We try to set the start time as closely as possible to align with the time constraints of the settlements.

Q: How do I know how much packing material to order?
A: When you book your move with us, we can deliver an oversupply of Boxes and packing materials. The delivery is free of charge. Any boxes that have not been used are taken back on Move Day and are not charged for. At the end of your move, once your unpack is complete, we can collect your used boxes and we provide a partial refund for used boxes.

Q: What can I do to ensure that my belongings end up in the correct room?
A: Pick a labeling system and use it consistently. You can either color code your belongings based on the rooms at your destination (bedroom red; living room: blue, etc.) or label the boxes with consistent shorthand to denote their location (DR for dining room, MBR for master bedroom, etc.). If possible, boxes should be labeled on 3 sides. Fragile boxes should be clearly labeled as fragile. Choose Fragile box Tape for best visibility, to order Fragile Box Tape, click here

Q: I have a home office. Do I need to empty out my filing cabinets?
A: When the cabinets are made of metal, 2-drawer filing cabinets can be left full. The top two drawers of a 4-drawer cabinet need to be emptied. All lateral file cabinets need to be completely emptied. All drawers need to be emptied in wood cabinets.

Q: What do I need to do to prepare my appliances for the move?
A: Your moving crew will wrap your large appliances in moving blankets to protect them on the truck. For maximum protection, request blanket wrapping followed by shrink wrapping prior to lifting. When moving with MetroMovers, a complimentary Plasma/LCD box is provided on Move Day for maximum protection. Ensure that your fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and washing machine are empty. Removalists are not electricians or plumbers - you need to arrange for the disconnection your washer, and refrigerator from any electric, water or gas connection. Professional installation of entertainment systems can be carried out by www.tech2home.com.au
All small appliances should be packed in boxes prior to moving, preferably encased in a layer of bubble wrap first for best protection.

Q: Can my pot plants be moved?
A: Yes, we do move pot plants, however, we cannot ensure the safe transport of live plants, which can be traumatized by motion, temperature extremes, or the time in the moving truck. Plants cannot be stored. To make the plants easier to transport, try not to water them for a few days prior.

Q: Can I keep moving costs down by having a family member or friend help with the move?
A: As most of our moves are charged by the hour, there are many ways in which you can keep your costs down. One of these is to assist with the move. You are most welcome to help in carrying smaller items to and from the truck or, if you are fit and able, to assist with the heavier items. Things to consider if you wish to assist: 1. Our movers are highly trained in working as a well oiled machine hence your assistance may actually end up in prolonging the move duration 2.You may end up injuring yourself 3. If you do assist and damage occurs to those items then these items are voided from our guarantee.

Q: I'm having difficulty arranging transportation on moving day. Can I ride in the cab of the moving truck with my movers?
A: Unfortunately we cannot transport customers for liability reasons. You may wish to arrange a ride with a friend or a taxi cab service on move day.

Q: Do the movers take time off for lunch? Do I need to provide lunch for them?
A: Moving is a physically taxing job and the crew needs time to eat and drink during the day. On an hourly rate local move, any time that they spend eating lunch will be deducted from your bill. As for providing snacks or liquid refreshments, it is certainly not required, though it is very much appreciated by the crews. On extremely hot days, the crews may require extra liquid replenishment. Please ensure that there is an accessible water source on your premises. Having the crew stay in your home for lunch may also make for a slightly shorter move day, as they will be able to eliminate time getting to and from a local eatery.

Q: Should I tip my movers?
A: As in other service industries, you may wish to offer your moving crew a gratuity. While there is no set amount expected, we recommend you tip based on how well you feel your crew performs. If you have additional questions, please speak with your Move Coordinator at the time of your move confirmation.

After moving day
